Australia apology to Aborigines

This story reminds me when I was a kid and my abuelita/grandma (who refused to learn English!) would say that white folks are always saying "I'm soooorry," without really having any intention of changing. She meant for me to see that Western culture used apologies as a means to relieve THEIR guilt and undo responsibility for wrongdoing, absent of any real concern for the consequences their actions had upon others. She stressed: "Asi no es nuestra manera, me entiendes?!" "This is not our way! You understand!" My grandma was a simple person, she just called things as she experienced them. Moral of the story: Don't ever say "I'm sorry" to an oppressed people, unless you're absolutely ready to clean up your shit!

Iran Burning While North American Media Fiddles with The King of Pop

I actually paid a fortune for a ticket to see MJ on September 10, 2001.  Besides the fact that it was the night before the world changed....I really liked the show.  Not a pop fanatic, I still recognize the importance and genius of that once little boy who fronted the Jackson Five.  I am convinced MJ was abused and used by his family and promoters, and truly led a tortured life.  And, I am so sorry he is gone.

That said.  For the past week, I have heard nary a word about the red hot crisis in Iran, the escalating craziness of North Korea's infantile leader, the deaths in Iraq, Afganistan escalation, world hunger--is it me, or is the attention on the death of a pop star just way, way too much?

Obama's Betrayal of Public Education? Arne Duncan and the Corporate Model of Schooling

Send the book to Obama, though I am not hopeful. Duncan is just a market fundamentalist who simply does not have a clue. See the piece below for a fuller analysis of his politics and background.

Who you calling a bitch? A Talk by Rosa Clemente

Rosa Clemente, a Hip Hop activist and journalist discusses the importance of Hip Hop culture and its expression of social reality for Black and Latino/Latina urban youth. She particularly examines the situation of women, as they interact with an often patriarchal, sexist culture. She looks at gains women have made in their struggle to express themselves through Hip Hop. See:http://www.zcommunications.org/zstore/7

The Schoolhouse Flunks

Another indication that Arnie Duncan is nothing more than Bush lite while extending Bush's education policies for a third term. Please someone send him a copy of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of Freedom.

Returning from OZ, with affirmation and excitement

What a terrific three weeks.  The universities and communities I visited were infused with enthusiasm and I feel that our project will grow with the addition of commited Australian cultural workers.  Lots of provocative discussion, and a lot of it encompassed talk about The Apology and Australians' (both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal) reactions.

Precious Knowledge: In Production at Dos Vatos

Here's a quick trailer of an upcoming documentary on the ethnic studies program at Tucson High School which has been under attack, featuring the voices of Chicano/Latino students who have gone through the program. For those working in education and especially with working class youth of color, this is an important issue to follow. It's outcome could potentially impact the question of high school ethnic studies courses across the country.

definitions of critical pedagogy

Hi

I'm Petar, doing a PhD in critical e-learning. I've been extensively using Freire, Illich, Kincheloe, McLaren etc. in my work. This website has been really helpful so far, so I thought that I might look for help from fellow researchers.

My methodological choice was to divide the research into 3 parts: politics of e-learning, based on various authors; e-learning technologies, which is  mostly based on Illich; and pedagogy, where I 'd like to reconceptualize Freire in the digital age. The first two parts are finished, and I 'm just about to start working on the third one.

Is there any good work around on Freire in the digital age? Could you please post titles, links, or even e-mail some sources?

Thanks a mill!

Live from Oz

After 2 weeks in Australia, I am taking a moment to reflect on the places I visited and the people I have been meeting.  Since I am lucky enough to have been here several times, I am able to stop looking for kangaroos, and start reading this enormous country.  Instead of a comparison as to what is or isn't done in Australia, Canada, or the US, I want to just address what I observed and heard here.  This is the first time I have come without Joe, and his presence is missed and felt by everyone I meet.  There is a commitment to assisting our Project in continuing--how beautiful that is....

Let Us Make Haste While We Can: A Conversation with Henry Giroux (Part 3)

For some, the first five months of Obama’s presidency have marked the dawn of a new era; a time when governance is filtered through the channels of pragmatism and diplomacy. For others, these five months have confirmed a belief long-held before candidate Obama overtook Hillary Clinton to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee - that he was not the change-agent he had so eloquently claimed to be.

Education for Seven Generation Sustainability

Myself and my colleague and friend, Lauren Waukau-Villagomez, recently presented some of the ideas in our new book (currently in press), Teaching Native America Across the Curriculum: A Critical Inquiry (Peter Lang) at the Native American Indian Education Association of New York State at the Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca, NY.

Obama and education

Fellow-blogger Christopher Emdin has raised some interesting and compelling issues in relation to Obama and education. The comments have generated additional layers onto which the platform of a decent (and just) society can be properly situated.

Obama’s Recent Decisions as Lessons for Secretary of Education Arne Duncan: A Focus on Urban Education.

President Obama’s recent trip to, and speech in, Cairo has been the subject of much discussion around the world. Some have viewed the event as a move towards unifying the world and bringing about a necessary change in the volatile relationship between the Middle East and the West.

Straitlaced - an exciting new documentary on gender roles

Wow, Debra Chasnoff has done it again.  From the brilliant documentary filmmaker who brought us "It's Elementary" "That's a Family" and "Let's Get Real", she has turned her lens on the issue of gender role expectations and how homophobia impacts how kids grow up and learn to fit into narrow concepts of man/woman and by default gay/straight.  I have only viewed excerpts, but based on her previous work and the content of the interviews I just read (http://www.edgenewyork.com/index.phpch=entertainment&sc=movies&sc2=features

Gendertopia in Vermont & $25k settlement in California

I'm excited to be writing about a new program that is partially funded by the Burlington School District that supports a flexible and open exploration of gender diversity in the context of teen lives.  It is being run by Outright Vermont, a local social service agency, in conjunction with the local school district. One of the program's organizers explained,
